Especially if you’re already looking forward to the 2013 holiday season and what picture related gifts you may want to plan on.

Here are five fun photo ideas for 2013.

Nature – Do you have a favorite plant, tree, park, garden or something similar near you that you see or visit regularly? Make it a point to take a picture of that spot every month on the same day (or as close to the same day as possible). This is a gorgeous way to capture the changing season throughout the year that could make a wonderful slideshow, collage or collection of Aluminyzed prints come this time next year.

The Family – Take the same idea from above and take a picture of the kids, the whole family or family pet on the same day every year. Add a sign with the month and year on it each time (a simple chalkboard or dry erase board will work here). Add a little seasonal décor when possible if you want! Again, this captures the way the family changes through the and would make a wonderful slideshow, collage or collection of Aluminyzed prints come this time next year. Not to mention calendars for family as next year’s Christmas gifts!

Photograph Your New Year’s Resolutions – Make a list of 12 things you want to try, places you want to visit or simply things you want to accomplish by 2014. Each month choose one and do it! Snap a photo and create a journal or scrapbook of your accomplishments. This can also be done as a family, or if you have kids allow them to make their list and photo bucket list for the year!

Make A Photo Bucket List – This entry is inspired by this fabulous post from our friends at Click It Up A Notch. Add to this list or create your own crazy, fun and inspiring photo ideas and set your sights on getting them over the next 12 months.

Get to Know Your Camera – If you got a new camera this holiday or if you just have one that you know offers more bells and whistles than you’ve gotten a chance to perfect yet, make this your year! Make a list of 12 different crazy settings and tools your camera offers and each month choose one to perfect! By the next holiday season you’ll be shooting photos like a pro!

Remember each mentioned above idea offers you a chance to build a gorgeous photo library! Which means the more phenomenal photos to choose from when getting your next fabulous Aluminyzed print!

We’d love to know, what fun photo goals would you add to this list?

Photo Challenge - Holiday

As we roll through the month of August quickly begin approaching fall we find the kids headed back to school (if they haven’t returned already) and ourselves looking back over the summer wondering where it went.

All you have to do is post a picture on our Facebook page of what summertime means to you. The fun thing about photo prompts is you can interpret whatever the prompt means to you. Just go through your favorite photos of the past few months and post the ones that screams “SUMMERTIME” to you.

On Friday we will pick one random winner to win a free 11x14 Aluminyzed photo (it does not have to be the photo you post for the contest)!

We will also choose one photo to be our new Facebook cover photo and that person will also win an 11x14! This means we reserve the right to the full size photo and the use of it to show off our Aluminyzed products (with credit of course).

This year’s theme is “Capture and Keep.” With the move to digital photography over the last decade, we find more of our pictures are ending up on our computers instead of in our photo albums or on our walls.

What better time than National Photo Month to take got through the photo library you have online or on your computer?

Find that favorite photo of that amazing vacation you took but now just sits collecting the occasional like on Facebook. Turn it into something special by Aluminyzing it and displaying it in your living room.

Maybe your office looks a little stale and the only photos you have of your kids are three years old. Find the gorgeous picture you took of the kids on a hike somewhere and Aluminyze. The picture you emailed to Grandma and Grandpa, but now just sit in your Flickr photo stream. Upload it and Aluminyze it! Maybe the gorgeous instagram photo of your garden from last spring. Or your favorite picture of your great-grandparents that you scanned and did nothing with.

Photographs were not meant to be computer files. They were not meant to collect dust in photo boxes. They should be in beautiful albums, scrapbooks, and most of all displayed in all their beautiful cherished Aluminyzed glory for all to see.

“Capture and keep.”

To me that means Capture the moments that make life magical, and keep them somewhere where that magic can touch you each and every day.

What does this years National Photo Month theme mean to you? We’d love to see what pictures you have taking up hard drive space that should be Aluminyzed and on display!

“Pictures, regardless of how they are created and recreated, are intended to be looked at. This brings to the forefront not the technology of imaging, which of course is important, but rather what we might call the eyenology (seeing).” -Henri Cartier-Bresson

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be compiling those tips and sharing them with you here on the blog!

This week we are going to take a look at tips for photographing kids. Kids can make some of the best photography subjects, BUT they aren’t exactly the easiest subjects. Unless you take some of these helpful tips along with your camera.

We’d love to know YOUR tips as well. Leave some of your own tips in the comments.

From: Jamie Carollo: Be GOOFY!!! You have to make them comfy. Make them laugh. Smile, act like goofs. Whatever it takes to get their real personalities to shine!

From Jeanne Hines Simon: My tip for photographing kids is to not let them know most of the time that you are taking pictures. I get some of my best shots just shooting while they are doing things naturally without posing. Their facial expressions and movements are so real that way!!!

From Lori Henderson: I’ve always given my child something to do while we take pics. Posed pictures of children can look unnatural, unattractive, and just plain weird, and they don’t have the attention span to just sit while you adjust all of your gear, settings, etc. But give them something to hold or play with and the photos always come out natural looking and beautiful!

From Maureen Carlson: I like to take candid shots so I try to just randomly take pictures and when they start to get all posed looking I just stop and chat with them for a while and discretely snap a shot here and there they are so adorable when they are relaxed and just being themselves. For the action shots I sit back and just shoot some of my favorite photos of my son are him running in the grass or through a sprinkler you can’t see his face but you know he is having a blast

From Trina Sanchez: take lots and lots at one time. You can always delete later to save space but I found that I always seem to get that one perfect picture when I take multiple shots!

From Steven Hauptman: Get down to their level, shooting at eye level looks the best.

From Kristi Kohser: My tip for photographing kids is simple: just shoot the photos without waiting for the “right shot”. Some of the best photos of my son have been candid’s and never would have been taken if he was posing.

From Bre McGloughlin: My tip for photographing kids outdoors when it isn’t the “magic hour” and you need just the right amount of lighting on little faces without it being too harsh on the kids—use a piece of white foam board! It’s the perfect thing, inexpensive and you can buy it at craft store. You can even fold it a bit so it stands up where you need it to give the best light on your subject.

From Becky McGuire: When you have a toddler have 2 or more people shooting. Use a fast shutter speed because it is hard to keep them in one spot for long. They will stop if you let them play with something they usually are not allowed to touch like a cell phone or iPad.

From Danielle Ferguson: Using a tripod set up makes it easier to get great pics of your kids, especially little ones, so you can peek out from behind the camera and get them to look over.

From Tyler ‘Froggy’ Lombardo: If you’re taking a group photo in the style of a class photo, as long as they’re all standing still, use a longer exposure to make sure it appears as if all of their eyes are open.

From Rosie Ornelas: Don’t be afraid to zoom in. Parents love close-ups of a child’s face, their little hands, or those cute tiny toes!

From Elizabeth Marie Miller: Take pictures outside where they can play in the sandbox or on the swings or seesaw, kids have to be entertained and enjoy getting their picture taken because they can lose interest in it very easily, so keep their attention and keep it fun.

From April Tomerlin: As a photographer and love for children I know photographing kids can be tricky when I shoot kids I love to try and capture candid shots, ones that they don’t know I am taking. It shows their innocence and imagination.

It may be hard to believe, but it’s that time again. Spring is the air and Mother’s Day is around the corner. The day when we celebrate the person we call, Mom. And of course we here at Aluminyze want to help make Mother’s Day really special for you and mom. So once a week for the next three weeks we will be picking a random winner to win TWO 8x10 Aluminyzed prints. One for you and one for mom!

All you have to do is post a picture of the person YOU celebrate on Mother’s Day (we totally get sometimes we celebrate mom, sometimes Grandma, or Auntie, and I know a few people who celebrate their dad who was both mom and dad while growing up. And that’s cool with us). Just post a picture and tell us what makes that person special to you. You can post it on our Facebook page or on your own page and Tag Aluminyze (otherwise we won’t see it). Remember, only one post per person please.

For the next three Mondays at 5PM (PST) we’ll choose a winner at random, giving you plenty of time to place your winning order before Mother’s Day! So start posting

And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for some other Mother’s Day special offers from Aluminyze the coming weeks.

Aluminyze Your Favorite Vintage Family Photo

Most of us have photographs that mean the world to us. Pictures of our family, our children, our pets and places we’ve been and love. Some of the most treasured photographs we may have displayed on our wall are ones that were taken years before we were born.

Old family photographs tell the story of where we came from, who we are, and how we ended up where we are today. Pictures of immigrant family members who tell the tale of how our family came to the United States in the first place. Or long ago wedding photos of our great-grandparents tell the first chapter in the long story of how we came to be.

Old photos of family homes, cars, pets and members all capture a moment in history that help us connect with our past. They are priceless.

Which is why Aluminyzing your old family photos is a brilliant way to not only show off these family treasures but to preserve them in a way photos printed on paper could never be preserved.

But why just tell you about it when we can just have you see for yourself?

That’s right, this week’s contest is showing us your favorite old family photo. Scan your photo and post it on our Facebook page. On Tuesday April 9th we’ll choose the best photo to get Aluminyzed on an 8x10 print!

For your best chance at winning follow these rules:

Your photo, once scanned, must meet the minimum resolution requirements for an 8x10 print, which are, 1500x1200. Photo shopping your photo to meet the requirements won’t cut it either. Try to choose photos that are 5x7 are larger. An 8x10 would be ideal.

Remember, Aluminyzing a blurry dark photo only makes the photo even more blurry and dark. Choose a photo that is a decent quality and will look awesome.

When scanning your photo go into your settings and find the setting for “Resolution” and opt for a larger size. How large, depends on a few factors. Remember to look for the largest photo you have available. An 8X10 will scan better and at a higher resolution than a 4X6…

Good luck and happy posting!

We here at Aluminyze wanted to share a letter we received from our friends at Land & Sea Imagery. Visit their website and check out the gorgeous photo galleries! Their photos are for sale and guess what? Land & Sea Imagery is now Aluminyzing their already stunning photos to offer some of the most gorgeous prints you could imagine having displayed in your home or office.

Here is the letter we received:

An open letter to The Aluminyze Group,

I just wanted to commend you for the quality product that you produce and give you a little insight as to how printing on aluminum has made a difference in how my work is now received.

Over the years, I’ve used some of this area’s top professional photo labs for my paper processingand printing. About 6 months ago, a good friend and professional photographer suggested that I consider having one of my images “Aluminyzed”. I have to admit, in all my years, and all the various paper and other non-traditional photo processes I’ve tried, yours is, by far, the most amazing and exceptional process I’ve seen.

Personally, I’m impressed with the dynamic tonal range and detail that your process maintains by printing on aluminum. After having several images produced to show clients the ‘phenomenal’ quality of an Aluminyzed photo over the traditional paper and canvas prints, few if any, are now opting for anything other than aluminum! Without exception, the most common thing I hear when someone sees one of these Aluminyzed photos the first time is “WOW”.

I’ve also noticed a spike in traffic on my website ‘Land and Sea Imagery’ now that I’m offering my images on aluminum. I’m also receiving great feedback on my ‘Land andSea Imagery’ Facebook page as well.

Again, I want to thank you for the quality and excellence of your product and services.

Fred Holmstock

North Palm Beach, Fl

Be sure and visit Land & Sea Imagery on the web and on Facebook and see for yourself the amazing results.

Want to know more about Aluminyzed photos?
One of the best parts of the great community we’ve developed on the Aluminyze Facebook page is having the community share their picture perfect life moments with us on the page. They are always so much fun to look though. It really does mean a lot when you share your moments with us. Which is why for this week’s contest, we are going to say THANK YOU.

We have pulled the names of everyone who has entered one of our contests (with the exception of past winners) and for the next week will be choosing a random name each day through Monday April 2nd! Each day the winner will win a free 8x10 Aluminyzed print as a Thank You for being an active part of our community.

If you have won (or purchased) an Aluminyzed print we’d love you to either post a picture of it on your Facebook page and tag Aluminyze OR visit our reaction page on Facebook and tell people what you think of your Aluminyzed print.

So remember to keep an eye out for YOUR name everyday for the next week.

If you’re new to the Aluminyzed community and haven’t entered one of our contests yet, don’t worry. We’ve got new ones every week and promise you’ll get plenty of chances.

But you don’t have to wait, visit our website and start your Mother’s Day shopping early!

Aluminyze Pop Quiz

One of the things we’d like to start bringing you on the blog are helpful hints, tools and advice to help you not only make the most of your camera but also life’s most picture perfect moments. This will not only help you take better pictures, but it will also help you have a leg up when choosing pictures to Aluminyze!

On our Facebook page we recently asked some trivia questions regarding photography and cameras and it got a huge response! We’d like to give another congratulations to all of our winners!

Here are the questions we asked along with our answers (as well as a few of YOURS).

What are the three elements (settings) that determine a photo’s exposure?

ISO: The ISO (International Standards Organization) is the setting that helps you controls how sensitive the image sensor is to light. The higher the ISO the less light you need to capture a photo. Keep in mind that an ISO set too high may cause an image with noise!

· Aperture: Aperture determines how much or how little your lens opens when you take a photograph. Because every time you take a photograph, the lens of your camera opens to let in light. Large aperture (remember it’s a smaller number) will decrease depth of field (that amount of your shot that will be in focus) while small aperture (larger numbers) will give you larger depth of field. . If you’d like a shallow DOF, for example in a shot of a flower that you want to be in focus but the background nice and blurred) you would select a large aperture and let the camera choose an appropriate shutter speed. If you wanted an image with everything in focus then you’d go for a smaller and let the camera choose an appropriate shutter speed.

· Shutter Speed: Shutter speed is the setting that controls the length of time the shutter is open, allowing light through the lens to the sensor inside your camera. Shutter speeds can go from very small fractions of a second, to several seconds long on most cameras. Here is an example of shutter speed numbers, from fast to slow:

1/2000 1/1500 1/1000 1/750 1/500 1/350 1/250 1/180 1/125 1/90 1/60 1/45 1/30 (An example would be for kids sports you’d want your shutter speed to be somewhere between 1/500 to 1/1000. Experiment and see what gives you the best result!)

Name three features marketers use in featuring their Digital Cameras that are misleading and/or not really as great as they make the feature seem.

Megapixels (vs. pixel density), digital zoom (vs. optical zoom), Electronic Stabilization (vs. sensor or lens based stabilization).

Why do most digital pictures get cut off when ordering an Aluminyzed Photo in any of our three available sizes? This would happen to any paper print in these sizes as well.

Aspect Ratio, Most Digital cameras take pictures that are wide. So when you order one of our sizes some of the photo has to get cut off on the sides in order to fit on the not as wide sizes that are popular today.

What is the primary reason an SLR camera shoots better quality photos then a point and shoot camera, even if a point and shoot has more megapixels and why?

The image sensor used in point and shoot digital cameras is generally much smaller than the image sensor used in a DSLR.

DSLR will hold its value longer than a point and shoot.

Typically larger aperture is my favorite aspect of a SLR… but the flexibility of multiple lenses, the heavier body to help reduce vibration, the larger sensor (better light sensitivity), and the manual focus ring

Because SLR cameras allow you to manually set aperture priority, shutter priority, ISO range and shutter lag or use an array of lenses as the job demand, Point-and-shoot cameras are designed for people who just want to pick up a camera and take a picture.

In the settings area of your camera there is an area that says something like “Resolution,” or “Image or Picture Size.” Most cameras will offer some variation of the following, 3MP (small) 6mp (medium) 8MP (Large) 12MP on up (Extra Large). Which MP setting should you have your camera taking pictures on and why?

The highest. The higher the megapixels, the higher the resolution and the higher the quality. A megapixel is the term used for a million pixels — and the more megapixels an imaging sensor has, the higher the camera’s potential resolution. Though a lower resolution is OK for simply posting a picture on Facebook (which only needs a 640 x 480 resolution which you can achieve with 1 megapixel) if you want to Aluminyze (or even print on paper) nice crisp copies of your photos you need to start out at least 6 megapixels for an 8 x 10 and 8megapixels or higher for 16 x 20 and beyond.
